Open Water System

Curaçao Sea Aquarium possesses an Open Water System to feed the facilities’ aquaria. This means that the aquaria are a replica of the animals’ natural habitat. Located in the corner of the steep Cornelis bay, oceanic currents constantly flow through, and the quality of this water makes this unique facility possible. The saltwater stored in a large tank creates enough gravitational pressure to move the water through all aquaria and overflow back to the canal, while also carrying the larvae of many fish and invertebrates that reproduce under our care.

Curaçao Sea Aquarium does not pre-filter the water due to the richness of nutrients and oxygen carried in with it. Together with natural illumination, we can recreate a stable and healthy marine ecosystem to educate the public about the flora and fauna of the surrounding waters of Curaçao.
